Transition to Adulthood

Many of my clients are navigating the transition between the world of high school and the adult world.  These teens and young adults are eager for greater independence, but also still working to understand the different set of expectations that come with being an adult.  This does not happen overnight, and sometimes people could use some help.  A Life Coach can be a useful mentor and advocate for the young adult, as they gain skill and confidence in their ability to master the practical knowledge and problem-solving needed for independent living.

A Note for Parents:

Some of these transition challenges belong to the parent: After years of taking care of your child, how do you learn to let go? Knowing they are working with a mentor trained to assist in problem-solving and developing adaptive skills can be very comforting to parents as they become less involved in their young adults’ daily lives. A guide can also be useful to the parents themselves, as they learn to adjust to their young adult’s autonomy.

This transition to adulthood can be particularly difficult should the young adult also have developmental or learning challenges. Parents of some of my neurodiverse clients in particular, have benefited from discussions that help them gain perspective or identify resources and options for next steps. Family consults and assistance in navigating adult disability services are among the coaching services I provide.
